What Motivates Kids?

So there's a lot to gain from regular physical activity, but how do you encourage kids to do it?

The three keys are:

  1. Choosing the right activities for a child's age: If you don't, the child may be bored or frustrated.
  2. Giving kids plenty of opportunity to be active: Kids need parents to make activity easy by providing equipment and taking them to classes and other active spots.
  3. Keeping the focus on fun: Kids won't do something they don't enjoy.

When kids enjoy an activity, they want to do more of it. Practicing a skill — whether it's swimming or riding a tricycle or martial arts — improves their abilities and helps them feel accomplished, especially when the effort is noticed and praised. These good feelings often make kids want to continue the activity and even try others.

I have been involved with teaching martial arts to children for more than 40 years.  Over those years I had the opportunity to teach thousands for kids and help other martial artists develop programs to inspire kids to train, develop positive beliefs, gain confidence and self esteem.   I don't know of another sport or art that does these things as effective as martial arts.   Classes are fun, kids get positive encouragement, learn to over come challenges, learn sportsmanship and goal setting.   If you are looking for an activity with a purpose contact a martial arts school that specializes in kids classes.   You and your child will be glad you did.

I’m freaking out. I was on the Orbit website last night in wanting to purchase the G3 Toddler Carseat and there’s nothing being sold on the website other than parts and accessories. That left a weird feeling in my gut and so I did some research and saw that Orbit was going out of business/being bought by Ergobaby and then I found a link with concerns for TDCPP found in the carseats. I bought the infant g3 car seat back in January of 2016, complete with the stroller and two car seat bases. Is mine affected? Can I get it recalled? I’m super confused as to what to do. My son is 9 months old and if his car seat is filled with toxins and chemicals, how do I get him tested and what kind of car seat do I go with? Money isn’t really an option when it comes to my babies health. Thank you!

I agree that kids want to do an activity more often when they like it. So I'll have my kids try out things like karate. If they end up liking it they'll be asking me to take them back.

It's awesome that this article talked about swimming, riding a tricycle, or practicing martial arts increases their talents and makes them feel successful, especially when their efforts are recognized and acknowledged. I'm glad that you explain it thoroughly and now it makes more sense. You did a great job of explaining kids' martial arts.

You made some great points here. Teaching kids physical activities such as taekwondo might be easy at first, but as time passes by, it's hard to keep them motivated. Do you have some tips on how to continuously make it fun for them?
